Did you know rabbits moult multiple times a year. This can be 4+ times depending on weather conditions and general coat growth. It’s important to groom your rabbit regularly to remove the loose fur from their coat to help prevent them from ingesting it which can cause gastrointestinal blockages. During a moult it is especially important to groom your rabbit daily.
Finding the right tools for your rabbit:
Different rabbit breeds will require different tools as their coats can vary in thickness, coarseness or softness and length. It can be trial and error but it’s best to find the best tools that work for your rabbit to keep them both happy and comfortable during grooming.
Example: Angora rabbits have a dense and fluffy coat and will need specific tools to comfortably remove loose fur and detangle their coat to prevent matting. Clipping/ shaving their fur may be required to keep them cool in summer depending on the climate and can be done safely by your vet. **non-Angora rabbits should not be shaved**
Tool options:
- Fine tooth grooming comb with rubber banding
- Slicker brush with soft nub ends
- Krest Goldilocks #5 comb
- Grooming mitt
- Lint roller (depending on coat type can be very helpful to remove loose fur
How to groom:
- Set you rabbit on a towel on a surface such as the kitchen bench or dining table. This will assist them to feel more secure while being groomed.
- Slowly and gently groom your rabbit with a combination of gentle removing the loose fur by hand, as well as with the comb or mitt that best suits your rabbit’s coat.
- Lint rolling can also be used for loose fur but ensure your rabbits coat is appropriate for this type of tool first.
- Once finished reward your rabbit with treats to help reinforce a positive experience.
